For fly fishing we almost exclusively use knotless tapered leaders made of monofilament and this for good reason. Mono Leaders are comparatively low in price and you can fish with them all types of flies, dries, wets, nymphs or streamer equally good. Just another fly tied on and you can continue to fish. Knotless Tapered Leaders don't have interfering knots like knotted leaders where knots are thick especially in the stronger part, acting like magnets to catch your fly while casting, but also algae and other debris.
Comes adding that leaders from monofilament can be extended and customized any way as you wish - a longer, best finer piece of tippet is knotted easily to the leaders' thin end by using a double surgeons or blood knot. Even better: you do not have to throw the leader away, if you once in a while cast a knot (wind knot) in it. With tippet material of corresponding diameter the leader can be tapered down again to the desired length and thickness. In this way, such a leader lasts a long time before it needs to be replaced.
But, leader is not leader, that's why we now chose the knotless tapered nylon Leaders from TROUTHUNTER, USA.
The leader is the most fragile connection between the angler and the fish, that's why only the best can be of choice here. Particularly important, too is a good turnover of the leader, which is ensured only by a rigid Butt section. This construction ensures the leader enrolls and straightens out completely to the fly at its end in any offered size, making accurate casts on target possible. PS: The length of 10 feet (3m) is sufficient for most situations in trout and grayling fishing, but for a more natural drift of the fly you can tie on an additional peace of tippet material to the leaders' thin end, preferably a little less in strength and diameter as the tip's. For example to a 4X leader (0.18mm tip section) tie on another 50 to 75cm peace tippet in 5X (0.15mm).
If you want to use a fluorocarbon tip at the TroutHunter nylon leaders' end, you should connect it with a tippet ring (Pitzenbauer-Ringerl). Fluorocarbon is harder than nylon and a knot does usually not hold very well because FC cuts into the nylon.
